Bavaria 2005 Unlock'd
We're back! We took the train back from Füssen on Saturday night, then had another "it's only a 10 minute walk!" adventure with our hotel. (Never ask cab drivers how long a walk something is--they drive for a living, what do they know?) It turned out we found the right hotel--in the wrong part of town. They called the one we'd made our reservation at, and got it changed over so we could collapse--between train transfers, getting lost, and "it's only a 10 minute walk!" we'd been walking for a good hour by then.

The cab drive to the airport was rather more expensive than it should have been if we'd been at the right hotel branch, but not too long, with the cabbie going 110 mph on the Autobahn! He was talkative too, and wanted to chat about cars and sports and his visits to the US to visit his daughter. I held up well under the steady stream of German, and managed to make intelligent comments and ask questions when he paused for breath, so I'm feeling pretty good. But it's a good thing he didn't bring up the history and politics of 19th century Bavaria.

We got in at 11:30 last night, and we're still waiting for one of our bags to come home, but other than that everything was smooth. I'm working at home this week, first covering the holiday, and then the vacations of our German and French people, who are both out on vacation. That means I'll have the European shift (3am-11am, eek!), and I'll have to hope all the new German hasn't buried my French.

While abroad, I was writing locked journal entries (so the whole world didn't know I was away). If you want to read them, they're now unlocked:

Day 1: Jetlagged and Sweaty in Bavaria
Day 2: In Which There are Heavy Books, Sushi, Strawberries, and Classical Jewish Mrimba Music
Day 3: Taking it Easy
Day 4: In Which Bears Yodel, but Flowers and Stamps Do Not
Day 5: Arbeit Macht Frei
Day 6: Auf Wiedersehen, München, Grüss Gott, Füssen
Day 7: Ein Schloss wie ein Traum
Special Feature: Cast of Characters

Pictures will be up later this week.

Glad you're home safe and sound!

How are you liking The Virgin Blue I read it last year...

I don't like it as much at the other books of hers that I've read; on the one hand, I like the slight fantasy element of the linked dreams. On the other, I don't like the fact that she leaves her husband in the end. She's pretty bitchy to him, I think, and he hasn't done anything wrong.
