Who Says People are No Damn Good??
I don't usually think of Atlanta as "my city," nor do I often think of it as a city, even-- more a random sprawl of suburbs. And I certainly don't think in terms of civic pride--we haven't lived here very long, after all.

But today I'm proud to be an Atlantan.

Great pictures. I went to my first SF Pride parade today, and it was excellent (even aside from seeing George Takei on the Google float!). In addition, all of the families there were really awesome; I loved the 'Proud Parent' signs, and the kids marching with their parents holding up signs they'd made themselves. One little girl's sign said "Yay for gay!" Apparently one of the Dykes on Bikes has her mom on board as a passenger every year, carrying a 'Proud Mom' sign.

It was awesome to see all the politicians and city officials (including police, firemen, judges, etc., and Mayor Newsome, natch) both marching/riding in support of, and marching as, LGBT. On top of that, the many religious groups marching in support really encouraged me that there are, in fact, religious people who aren't quite so prejudiced and closed-minded in this matter as those I grew up around.

One of the most touching things, though, were the WWII vets, too old to walk, riding along; there were only two of them, but we're also starting to see Korean War vets now, too. And the couples holding signs indicating how long they've been together, including one man who held up a picture of his deceased partner of 25 years, with 'Denied Widower Rights. That's exactly the sort of thing that most gets me up in arms when my family starts going on about the Homosexual Agenda all over again.

I'm glad I went, it was good to see. It's such a relief to be in an environment like this; our choir in Charlotte had to have a security escort for the last Pride, since they'd received threats after the previous one. Charlotte is relatively open and accepting compared to my Southern cities, but it's got a long, long way yet.

I was just bowled over by the crowds, and the support, and all the positive feeling. It was wondeful.

Heh, I went to the Pride parade up here in NYC and got a lot of pics with my camera phone. It was a blast.

Oh, I bet NY has a wonderful pride celebration! That'd be something to see.

It does indeed; I have been there myself, back when I lived in NYC. Even marched in it once or twice.

I went to the Gay Pride Parade in Hollywood, CA a few years ago. I guess Dykes on Bikes are everywhere! My California cousin Debbie's closest friends are a group of gay men called "the girls". They are the best!
