Sunrise, Sunset
This weekend we watched "Before Sunset," the sequel to the 1995 film "Before Sunrise," in which Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy wander around Vienna for a night, talking about nothing in particular, while nothing in particular happens to them. For a movie about random people doing random things in a random setting, this was surprisingly fun viewing, owing to a pair of engaging characters, and a quick, witty, script, by turns touching and sardonic. The two end up by promising to meet 6 months later in Vienna, romantically trusting to fate by not exchanging contact information. Hey, they're 23.

Sequel Spoilers )

There's apparently some talk about continuing the storyline, and I'm imagining an episode several sequels down where Jesse and Céline turn up unexpectedly inhabiting the same nursing home in, oh, say, Rome. They wheel around the Coliseum for a few days chatting about arthritis and digestive problems, and promise to show up for each other's funerals.

In a way, that might actually end on a more positive note than "Before Sunset."
