Costuming Weekend
Susan's school uniform is more or less complete: the skirt is shortened and re-hemmed, the blouse is pressed, and the tie is made. I've got little metal cheese charms on order from eBay, out of which to make a tie tack and possibly earrings. I still have hopes of designing an embroidered patch for the Quirm College for Young Ladies, but I don't own an embroidery machine, and companies that do custom patches want large order lots.

Death of Rats is underway! I cobbled up a prototype
out of pipe cleaners, fabric scraps, and an origami balloon head.

If you think that's one of the most disturbing things you've ever seen, just wait.

The rat skull arrived on Friday--I settled on a 6 cm
muskrat skull that came in a 10" cubic carton
labelled in no uncertain terms "Skulls Unlimited."
God only knows what the neighbors thought. I don't
want to know what the postman thought.

I was wondering how to start building the armature, when I thought, heck, this thing's going to be mostly hidden under a black cape. All I really need is something to support the skull, and something to attach the itty bitty scythe to. So I went to the dollar store and got a cheap knock-off Barbie-type doll, pulled off the legs, and swapped out the head.

This is the most disturbing thing you'll see today:

Before anyone else can say it, yes, Sid in "Toy Story" does come to mind.

He looks a little better once I drape some black fabric around him.  After I make the cape, it will need an itty bitty scythe and a long, bony tail.  skellington  suggested pirating bits from a dinosaur model.

Hmmm. I wonder.
I'd almost bet theres a dinosaur skeleton toy that would not only get the armature better but would also *almost* do for the head...and guarenteadly theres some 'bad guy' action figure somewhere thats got a beautifully molded scythe the right size... possibly one of those Hot Topic sculpture toys...

Re: Hmmm. I wonder.
Well, the scythe is easy to make, and I'm not interested in the trunk being particularly bony--just the bits that stick out of the cloak. So a tail and possibly a paw to grasp the scythe.

I don't normally need this icon for you . . .

Mail order companies may require large lots, but there's an embroidary place at our local mall that does everything one off. Just find out what format their system requires the input to be (often TIFF or EPS graphic) and you should be set.

Huh, I'll have to check into that! Thanks!

Pictures, naturally. There's hardly anything I do that doesn't end up photographed, eventually!

Skulls Unlimited is being featured on "Dirty Jobs" on the Discovery Channel.

Interesting. Slightly disturbing. But interesting.
